From Best Friends to Boutique Hoteliers: The Creative Reinvention of The June Motel
Today I’m joined by two adventurous, whip-smart creatives whose friendship and flair for reinvention turned a dusty roadside motel into a pink-hued phenomenon.
April Brown and Sarah Sklash are the co-founders of The June Motel and stars of Netflix’s hit series Motel Makeover. Once a public relations pro and a government operations specialist, they walked away from stable careers in 2016 to chase something wildly different: joy, beauty, and a glass of rosé at check-in.
In this episode, we explore what it takes to follow a vision that hasn’t been done before, the magic of designing spaces that make people feel something, and how business disagreements can become unexpected blessings.
We talk about:
The creative instincts that led them to their first motel purchase
Their vision for what hospitality could feel like
Behind-the-scenes stories from filming Motel Makeover
How their contrasting strengths create harmony in business
The art of soulful entrepreneurship, one pink wall at a time
Whether you’re dreaming of building something of your own or just love a good transformation story, this episode will leave you inspired, delighted, and maybe planning your next girls’ getaway.
📺 Motel Makeover was nominated for three Canadian Screen Awards in 2022, including Best Lifestyle Program or Series.
