For 30 years I have been working with energy, breath, and the body, and this conversation meets that same level of truth through the lens of making, creating, and earning mastery.

In this episode, I dialogue with Amy Foster, songwriter, novelist, and maker, in a conversation that is bold, honest, and deeply grounding.

Amy names it clearly
“If you can’t handle the fact that you’re going to suck, then get out.”
“The universe has its own clock. Sit down. Be humble.”

This is a conversation about what it actually takes to make something real.

We talk about truth, craft, mastery, discipline, creative process, finishing what you start, and the willingness to be bad long enough to become good. We explore her life between music, writing, and making, her experience with dyspraxia, cancer, Iceland as a place of transformation, and why honesty is the doorway to real creativity.

Amy does not romanticize creativity. She respects it. Mastery is earned.

About Amy Foster

Amy Skylark Foster, born in Victoria, British Columbia, grew up between Los Angeles and Toronto. She earned her degree at American University’s School of International Service, briefly imagining a career in diplomacy involving kaftans and dinner parties, which, sadly, is not the way diplomacy actually works.

A nudge from her father, David Foster, (a 16 time Grammy Award winning producer behind artists like Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, and Chicago) led her to songwriting, where she co wrote hits like “Home” and “Haven’t Met You Yet” with Michael Bublé. She honed her craft in Nashville, writing lyrics as her full time work, and in the process discovered her true passion in novel writing.

She is the author of When Autumn Leaves and The Rift trilogy.

An avid maker, Amy paints, spins, embroiders, knits, and sews both clothing and quilts, while continuing to write novels and the occasional lyric. Now splitting time between Portland and Akureyri, Iceland, she founded Valkyrie Fiber, the first and only Merino Icelandic yarn hybrid, and Valkyrie Craft, where she shares her mixed media art and upcycled creations while building a wider community of makers.
